Montpellier fought back from a goal down to defeat already relegated Auxerre 2-1 claim the title over big-spenders Paris St.Germain. Montpellier began the season with the goal of avoiding relegation playing in their third season back in Ligue 1 after five seasons in Ligue 2. Crowd trouble led to delays totaling two-and-a-half hours, with the angry home fans venting their frustrations at their club being relegated for the first time, after 34 years in Ligue 1. The fans pelted the pitch with toilet paper, hurled tennis balls, tomatoes and fired flares onto the pitch before anti-riot police got things back under control. The hosts looked like they might shatter Montpellier’s dreams when French star Olivier Kapo put the hosts on top with a header on 20 minutes. John Utaka, who joined Montpellier in 2011, from England struggler Portsmouth equalized 12 minutes later when he converted a simple tap-in after being setup by Senegalese international Souleymane Camara. After the match resumed with fifteen minutes remaining Utaka handed more misery to the irate fans when he fired home after a brilliant turn in the box to put Montpellier ahead for good. Other Africans in the game for Montpellier were Camara and Tunisian midfielder Jamel Saihi. Morocco defender Abdelhamid El Kaoutari was an unused substitute. Montpellier's star of the season and Ligue1 player of the year award winner Younes Belhanda was suspended for the match. |
